When training do you use puppy pads in case there are accidents or do you steer away from that and just mop up that way you aren't sending mixed signals to your dog?

I had never heard of puppy pads before last year so we just bought our dogs up with old-fashioned potty training. We would take them out every hour and praise them when they did their business. Also took them out after every meal or nap and that seemed to work just fine!
