Banned Breeds
Hi Everyone! In the area I live, it has become very common for businesses, insurance companies, property managers, etc to ban certain breeds of dogs. For example, when you buy a home and you are getting the required home owner's insurance, some companies will not insure you if you have certain breeds, even if it is a dog mixed with one of the mixed breeds. These are the dogs that many home insurance companies do not allow: Pit Bulls, Staffordshire Terriers, Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Chows, Great Danes, Akitas, and Alaskan Malamutes. In one area near me, the whole town has made it illegal to own any type of Bull Terriers. Is this common practice in other areas? Have you experienced discrimination based on your breed of dog?

That's incredibly sad. We have certain banned breeds here too. It makes me so cross, sure every dog has some natural instinct but that doesn't make them dangerous. Children and animals are the same, their life experiences shape them. It's such outdated thinking, hopefully this will change soon

Unfortunately that is practice in most areas. I guess they must have had a number of claims from bites from those breeds. It's unfortunate that a few bad apples ruin it for the majority

The dogs listed are some of the ones that cause the most injury if they do bite or attack a person and it's believed that they are most likely to attack people. For those reasons, some of those breeds are ones that are frequently trained to be guard dogs or attack dogs. Insurance companies view them as liabilities so they refuse to insure a home if one of them are on the premises. In my area, pit bulls are the #1 in the banned dog list. There have been so many people and other's pets attacked and some killed by the breed that many businesses have decided the breed is the problem. I think that most of the time it's actually a training problem. I believe proper training is essential for breeds that have the intense instinct to protect and attack.
