I've only put costumes on my Husky around Halloween. I have to keep an eye on her constantly though because she doesn't like it and will rip it off and destroy / eat it. We live in a climate that is primarily hot year round so she doesn't appreciate the extra layer!

I put a sweater on my dog in the winter before going outside just because she has short hair and since she's an inside dog really doesn't have much of a winter coat. Had a Boston terrier once tried to put clothes on her but she would just stand there and fall over in protest
