How do you get your dog to stop pulling on the leash when your out for walks?

After 6 years, I'm still struggling with that one! When we first leave the house, she is SO excited she pulls super hard and I'm sure I look like one of the cartoon characters being taken for a walk by their dog! After we are walking for a bit, she settles down and is easier to manage but we haven't gotten better with that initial jerk out of the yard!

When I got my first dog ( at the age of 9) our training center encouraged us to walk using a choke chain. So every time they would pull on the lead it would tighten but if they walked closer to you the chain was loose. Is this still a thing?? It somehow doesn't seem moral as our perception of dogs has changed from being pets to being family members!

Choke and prong collars are still in use. I think the majority of people and organizations are against them today but people who work with very large breeds and especially aggressive dogs still use them because a harness offers very little in the way of control with an aggressive or untrained dog.
